Ja I agree.  I didn’t include Hofstadter but he is perhaps a better choice than the ones I offered: way more readable, wrote way more stuff.

 

I was privileged to meet him in person.  He came to Stanford on 1 April 2000 and joined a panel discussion.  That was a marvelous time.

Douglas Hofstadter and his books. First Gödel, Escher, Bach: An Eternal Golden Braid and then all his other books.

Douglas Hofstadter probably do not think of himself as an philosopher but the difference between him and a self proclaimed philosopher is purely philosophical. 

Also his books are rather more readable than most despite the heavy content.
