I imagine it comes from early drawings of light going into the optics of an
eye...

I'm not sure how the leap is made to get to the eye sending out a beam
though.

Maybe it's like the red laser eyes of a terminator or a borg?  Or maybe
those ideas echo the earlier notion that the eye sends a signal... like
radar?

It's an interesting question
