The challenge is not the software.  The challenge is getting people
who need to stay mentally active, to start and keep doing mentally
active things.  A lot of people have a learned distaste for
intellectual work.  With these people, you could spend billions of
dollars making AR software and it would be utterly, completely,
entirely wasted - or you can do the equivalent of counselling (costing
a few hundred, maybe a few thousands, of dollars per person) and get
them active with the activities and resources already available.
