Subject: [ExI] Tool use by dog

I like dogs, but I have never seen such obvious tool use by a dog. Was it
trained or was it spontaneous? German Shepherd dogs are considered to be the
third smartest breed.

Hi Stuart,

I have been around dogs much. Love em. Watch em. Such fun beasts they
are.

My intuition is telling me this dog was trained, rather than dog reasoning
that boy was doing something dangerous to get ball, dog need to pull boy
away, dog get his ball from the pond so boy will not go back and do it
again. That sounds like too much reasoning for a dog. But dogs can be
trained to do stuff like this.

A dog is far more likely to cheerfully jump into the fountain and fetch the
ball, but not fish it out with a pole.
