Colin I also concluded the water had to be somehow diffusing thru the polyvinyl chloride, but I had never seen such a remarkable demonstration of it.

 

Now I have a pair of 18 yr old crumpled liter bottles, both with a mass of 816 grams.

 

I don’t know what to do with them, but I may contact the local high school chemistry teachers and offer them as a demonstration of diffusion.
