One of the arguments used at the time the vaccines became available is that even if they have no long term benefit, the short term benefit is that they prevent hospitals from being overwhelmed with patients.  Unintended but paradoxical result: the hospital where I was born tragically many decades ago had too few patients and went out of business.  Unintended but tragic result: the hospital where my second cousin frequented for the past 15 years for chronic pericarditis was no longer available, resulting in his passing away.
