Billw, at the high school where I work with science Olympiad students is a guy who is clearly gay, but cannot express it because his family is from the Middle East and are part of a religion which flatly refuses to allow homosexuality.  They are in America but not of America.  He’s a nice kid, but every time I am anywhere near him, I get the unstated vibe.  I don’t know what the heck he is going to do, but probably finish high school, move far away, then quietly be what he is.

 

In the long time agos, Henry Ford imported immigrants to his car factory as strike breakers and to torment the local Jews, who Ford hated.  That community still exists in that area, long after the car factory has mostly gone extinct.  They are not kidding: no gay allowed in that society.  It is not tolerated.
