Of course. I was privileged to witness a professional author in action, firsthand. Damien Broderick was a guest in my home during the time he was preparing a second (2001 revision) edition to The Spike. He spent about three hours crafting that 1.5 pages that dealt with Mersenne primes (pages 86 and 87 in the hardback Forge edition.) He and worked together to make sure all the technical details were perfect. He experimented with varying sentence structures, different words. The man is brilliant with words.
I later asked him if an entire book is crafted to that level of effort. He explained that some of them are, such as the popular science book The Spike, which was a heeeellllll of a job. Some of the SciFi is easier and faster generally, but as you said, writing is a job.
Where I was going with it: be aware of the marketing advantage of writing towards a particular market. This is what Disney is completely missing, and as a result, their strategy is an epic fail.
