Gadersd, you may not be familiar with Eliezer Yudkowsky.  He is another one for whom traditional education just didn't work.  He never went to college, and didn't even finish traditional high school.  He 1600ed the SAT when he was age 16 then decided to hell with it, get a GED or something and get on with the task of trying to save humanity from itself.

I was one of those privileged to meet him when he was still a teenager and being an acquaintance all these years.  I am in full agreement with those who argue that traditional university training is not the only way.
