'tis a great mystery! I think most people including me are mathematical
platonists or would be if they investigated the philosophy of mathematics.
On this view, we do not invent mathematical truths. We discover them. 1+1
has always = 2 and it could never have been otherwise. If we discover them
then where are they before we discover them? Platonists would say they
exist in the platonic realm. For purposes of this discussion, that is
where we find our mathematical referents.
