[ExI] Looking back on the list

I've decided to try and tackle the stubborn "unread" email folder. I cleared most of it, but there was a period in 2013 when I was working long shifts and had unreliable internet access and just didn't check my email for a couple of months. Looking through these, I've found old extropy-chat digests which entertain me greatly. Anders contributed regularly, we could just about talk about politics without the list melting down, and people were more interested in bitcoin than AI. (October 23 2013 Bitcoin hit $210, which pleased the boosters. Who would have guessed how the crypto market would twist and turn?)
Depressingly, all the doomy talk of the future of US politics and the budget deficit turned out to be laughably optimistic. Reality has dumbfounded our expectations over and over.
Here's hoping that in the 2030s we'll all be pleasantly surprised by how things are turning out.
