I agree with Lee -- it does indeed seem like "moral cowardice" that discourages people from standing up to bullies.  I had similar school experiences, particularly with being told I was an "easy target".  This sometimes escalated to physical abuse, including one episode in which I was chased and pelted with sticks and rocks -- by people who supposedly had better social skills than I did.  

The only reason to side with a bully is so the bully doesn't see you as a target, but the problem with that mentality is that it enables the bullies to continue to hurt those who refuse to explicitly or tacitly approve of bullying behavior.
