Irrevelant to the House, which tracks population; the question is not
how many states are 'red' but how many people live in the 'blue' states.

CA, the most populous state in the country. IL, which is fairly high up
there. If you go by regions, the usual breakdown is NE and Pacific
Coast vs. South and Plains.
