Here is a URL [1] for a University of Cincinatti report about methods for
growing "long" (18mm) carbon nanotubes in quantities that would seem to be
considered the early stages of commercialization. This is interesting one
can imagine a whole set of industries that could be significantly altered by
inexpensive nanotubes -- if nanotubes have ~60x the tensile strength of
steel with atoms that weigh only 25% as much it looks like one could
significantly reduce the 1700+ lbs (770 kg) one finds in the average
automobile.
