And bear in mind that it's a pioneering attempt to register the 
churning thoughts and pre-thoughts of a fairly uneducated but 
ebullient woman in Dublin around the start of the 20th century.

And the rest of the novel isn't all like that (phew!) but adopts and 
appropriates a number of different styles and voices.
