Joyce was a *Modernist*:

It is also important to point out that Joyce was a very good writer of
(relatively) traditional prose, such as "Dubliners" and "Portrait of
the Artist as a Young Man", in the same way as Picasso was a very
capable representationalist painter when he felt like it.
