relationship could be a very smart thing to do and religion can help to
reinforce this desire. The bulk of human history had us at the mercy of
horrible STD's that could damage or even outright destroy our health and
that of our children. But *celibacy* in terms of never marrying/never being
sexual/having no offspring just for the cause of avoiding any chance of
contracting STD's would be (at least to me) very sad and depressing. But
even in a relationship you must be able to trust your partner to not infect
you with an STD due to their (mis)behavior.
