A friend adds:

<Here is a recent paper on the arXiv that gives some of his basic 
ideas, such as the creation of fermions out of "absolutely nothing," 
with the vacuum state being the "hole" in the zero state left after 
the fermion is created.  He uses this definition to get to a special 
form of relativistic QM which can explain from first principles many 
aspects of the Standard Model.

His theory apparently has experimentally testable consequences.  I 
don't know anything about it beyond that, but it looks fascinating.

By the way, one of his papers was refused by the arXiv around 2004, 
apparently for being too controversial.>
