Notice the end result: their false debunking winds up accepted.
So, yes, it would have been of less benefit to them to do that.

Not all who claim to be scientists are concerned with the truth.

(This is why I prefer applied sciences - technology, and
bringing inventions to the market.  The market has plenty of
"reviewers" - customers - who will call a spade a spade, and see
right through competitors' efforts to call it a turnip.)
