Well, I suspect it might be a little subtler than that.

Virginity tests may actually have been aimed at avoiding later rape
complaints where lack of virginity were offered as evidence that a
rape actually took place (on the tune of "How do you dare suspect poor
victims of prior consensual sex, thus publicly labeling them as
prostitutes and adding insult to injury?").
