Even more importantly, we would be actually starving if we knew what to do
with them, but could not do it. A naked man in a camp of wheat is going to
die, AFAIK.

Does it? This is not a rhetorical question. For instance, no matter how
much you may like the vampire myth, mammal blood is not poisonous in
general for us, but cannot be digested unless processed one way or another.
