[ExI] vw games emissions tests

You have likely heard by now that VolksWagen is in big trouble with the EPA
for rigging their cars to burn clean in test and burn optimally while on the
road (two different things.)

 

How did they do that?

 

I have some ideas, but the real question is this: does reverse-engineering
VW's emissions settings violate intellectual property rules?  If not, can we
as consumers rig our cars to run clean in test and optimally at all other
times?  Can we use VW's tricks to tell the car when someone is at the wheel
or not?
