I've seen this suggestion a few times on this list, so apparently y'all
aren't aware that this work has been done already at Stanford, by Marc
Levoy and his students. They presented their results at SIGGRAPH in
2000. One of the outcomes, was that they were able to look at the statue
from virtual viewpoints that weren't previously possible in real space.
They noticed that the expressions on the left and right sides of his
face are telling different stories. His raised arm makes it hard for an
observer on the ground to see both sides at once.
Anyway, high-res scans are available.
