[ExI] Why the reaction wheels on Kepler failed?

One explanation though would be hard to confirm unless and until some of these spacecraft might be recovered.... Or might it be possible to put a platform with metal reaction wheels on a loopy orbit, wait for a few solar even to occur, then recover it (when it loops back in) and examine the bearings?
