Starting a fire is not so much a question of temperature as it is about
getting oxygen to the burning wood. If you have a 12 x 12 beam, you're
going to have a hell of a time getting it to burn sustainably without
starting with smaller pieces. That's why one starts campfires with kindling
and gradually add larger pieces.
