But those males had mothers, and they had genes not to fight to the death,
and so there was a 50% chance the males inherited them from her, the males
also had fathers, and they may have had those same "not to fight to the
death" genes for the very same reason.

Maybe, but evolution can quickly become extremely complicated and counter
intuitive, so that is very far from being obvious.
