Math competitions are objective: there is only one right answer.  There is no way to bullshit your way through a math test or a physics test.  The machine which scores the test doesn’t know or care whose answer sheet it is.

 

Universities are trending toward de-emphasizing objective metrics for admissions.  Otherwise, their campus would be almost entirely Asian.  Some schools find this unacceptable, so they look for ways around it.

 

Conclusion: de-emphasizing objective metrics of academic prowess is a way to express racism.
