Here is my Quora answer to that:

Here is something everyone can do: be a better listener. Often we are in
our own little world, having daydreams and fantasies, old memories and so
on. Then too, we are listening but thinking of what we are going to say
when we get the chance.

So, there are many things that divert us from close listening that we can
stop doing and focus carefully on what is being said.
