Clarification: modern society has made itself completely dependent on electricity, satellite and fiber optic communications systems, Diesel fuel and gasoline, high-energy transportation and high speed communications, not just for convenience but for survival.  The whole time, were we asking what would happen if some catastrophe caused the complex systems to fail?
