This is kind of a nightmare for programmers.  I once went to Costa Rica and
had with me a dictionary dated about a century ago, and when I used it the
locals looked at me like I was nuts - which I was.  Language changes all
the time, as we can tell when we look up the etymology of a word and see
how it has changed over the centuries.

Then there are idioms, which, even if you know the language, can be
impenetrable (mare's nest).  Maybe it is we who should learn how to talk to
them rather than vice versa.   bill w
