I suspect it's simply a misapplication of unconscious evolutionary logic to relationships with robots. Males are more likely to seek multiple mates, so they would be attracted to harems of multiple robot girlfriends. While some women may be interested in a "reverse harem", I suspect it's more likely that women will be attracted to robot children or robot pets. A robot boyfriend to open jars and take out the trash might be nice, but I doubt most women would want more than one. A thousand hypercute robot kittens, maybe....
