That would have happened long ago if it truly was that dominant.

In each generation, there are pulls and incentives for some individuals to
not have children.  These keep happening, even in modern times, though the
natures and magnitudes may differ.  I see no justifiable reason to believe
these will go away in the foreseeable future.
