You might think it's like the old FTL dilemma from sci-fi: if you invent a
slow FTL drive, do you launch an expedition to nearby stars now or wait for
a faster drive, in the hopes that the combined time of waiting then faster
travel will be less than the travel time of the drive you have now?

 But it's not.  People are using energy now.  The need is now.
