The thing is they were never really genderless, if they were then you wouldn't find anything wrong with the following sentence: 
"When a mammal feeds his young he lets his offspring suck milk from his breast"

If we take on the paradigm that gender is all in the mind, then there is not a thing wrong with that sentence.

 

Everyone can win here.  Let gender be in the mind but sex be objective and verifiable by microscope with one drop of spit or blood.  Either those chromosomes are XX or XY, with the trisomy cases having a third category.  Then let sports be segregated by sex but not by gender, which is ambiguous.  Let Title IX funding be awarded not by gender but by sex.  

 

Not only has gender become ambiguous, it can be switched at will, without surgery or medications, as often as one wants.  Sex is immutable still.  Everyone wins.
