There is an important lesson here: there are no legitimate shortcuts to legal convictions.  The New York court tried a novel shortcut which failed to convince the American people.  So... they swung over to what appeared to be an unlawfully-convicted political adversary of New York.  The legal system cannot be used as a legitimate political tool.
