[ExI] what it looks like outside our bubble

I have been hanging out on ExI for over three decades, but I have friends
who have never been here and are quite unlikely to stay long if they visit
the place. What does it look like from out there?

I have a third cousin and genealogy collaborator who knows a little about
stuff that interests me, such as how AI has figured out some puzzles in
genealogy that stumped the experts for a century, how AI can write a better
version of itself, recursive acceleration in software, etc. He was
delighted when I explained recursive AI: GOOD! Please build me a robot to
go thru those mind-numbing audits, then tell me if everything is there and
nothing is threatening to explode.

This cousin is not a computer guy. His job in the military, and as a
contractor after he retired, was to audit and inspect long term military
storage facilities, make sure everything that is supposed to be there is
there in the quantity the inventory says is there, that nothing is rotting
or leaking or poses a fire hazard and all that. All long-term storage must
be safe to store long term (rifle ammo manufactured over a century ago is
still perfectly good, meets reliability specs, etc. (did you know that?
(century old thirty aught six ammo, assuming it is properly stored, used in
ww1 carbine rifles will still meet the reliability specs in place at that
time.)))

He sent me this cartoon, which represents his understanding of the
singularity. He doesn't call it that, but rather just AI.

This is the view from outside our tiny nanoscopic bubble.
