You've got it backwards. The Democratic minority  (55-45) working together, can’t get the majority party to reopen government. All the Republicans need to do is change the provisions in the homoeroticly named "Big Beautiful Bill" …Ja

Ja so we are told.  However the Republicans and current POTUS recognize the huge advantage of the shortest and simplest sound byte, and how that advantage accumulates.

Team Red gets to say: VOTE, open now or stay closed?  

Result: 55 votes to open 45 to stay closed, with all but one red team voting to open (Rand Paul argues the BBB is still waaaaay the hell too big) with all but two blue team votes to stay closed.

This forces the blue team into a more complicated sound byte: stay closed until a provision is changed such that yaaaaakkity yak and bla bla.  The voters have a very short attention span.  They see POTUS and the red team urging open now.  They see the blue team voting (almost in unison) to stay closed, and that is as far as most people understand.  They don’t know about or care about subtleties, nuance, this change or that change, they don’t know or care.

So… POTUS and the red team know they don’t need to compromise or change one damn thing, which explains why the red team isn’t compromising or changing one damn thing.  They understand the steadily-accumulating long-range public opinion advantage of having the shorter simpler sound byte.  Clearly they are pressing the hell outta that advantage.  Red team gets to keep having Open Now votes, blue team is stuck with Stay Closed, Don’t Open Until You Fix Or Change Yakkity Yak and Bla Bla.

Advantage team red, with advantage accumulating all the time.

I might buy back into my long-march shares today.

John I will end this missive with an encouraging note: I do commend you on your handling of a live-grenade political issue.  I have seen examples all around of participants treating each other with respect, the way we would talk to each other if we were in person at a party.  We would disagree but could still be friends, the way Jeff Davis and I have always been.  We were poles apart on big political issues, but we always got along, online and in person.  We could laugh about it, for we called ourselves proles: we were two proles, two poles.  Good thing for me: Jeff now has enough money he could buy every one of my neighbors’ houses and move refugees from the insane asylum into them.  He’s the richest prole you ever saw.

Cool, we can handle hot button issues in this forum, and probably should discuss it more than we do, for we can inform each other on how to invest in stuff like future-meme shares, BitCoin, distressed power generation facilities, that kinda thing, help each other make buttloads of money.
