The Singularity coming in the near term is a model of the future but not the only plausible one.
Consider the alternatives:
A hostile foreign military develops AGI, they weaponize it against the rest of the world and defeat every military system, so that nation controls everything everywhere.
AGI happens, but it isn’t what we thought it would be: it can do a lot of stuff but has zero ambition for becoming the boss (that one is very plausible.)
AGI doesn’t happen for reasons we don’t understand (very plausible for reasons we don’t understand.)
AGI doesn’t happen and now… we must deal with the consequences of assuming it would happen. John consider that scenario the corollary to your argument that the US government will never default on its debt because it never has before. By that line of reasoning, the Singularity will never happen because it never has.
My favorite alternative: the Singularity will happen but there is some cool stuff that happens first, things such as I am seeing now: a kind of surging renaissance among the humans everywhere. I live in the San Jose suburbs where lots of cool fun businesses are cranking up, lotsa interesting techy stuff, the humanoid robots, the advanced computerey stuff in cars such as self-driving this and that, the drones this and that, venture capital eeeeeverywhere, eager to get in on new fun stuff, it’s like a replay of 1999 and 2000, lots of venture cap looking for ideas for how to spend itself and make more venture cap. I am not just anticipating a new renaissance, I recognize we are experiencing it RIGHT NOW and oh it is cool. Is this a fun place and time to be living or what?
