The economic apocalypse was "in plain sight" 20 years ago, about the time we first had this discussion, and it was also "in plain sight" 120 years ago when others had almost identical conversations. Do you see any reason why the matter is more urgent now than it was 20 years ago, or 120 years ago? I sure don't! John K Clark

I do. The portion of federal government revenue which goes to paying interest on what we have already borrowed has now surpassed military expenditures. We should have always considered Social Security and Medicare as separately funded (regardless of the 1994 accounting tricks.) If we do that, the federal government has three categories of spending: military, interest on debt, everything else combined.

The interest on debt is now bigger than the other two categories, and we are borrowing like crazy to pay back what was borrowed from Social Security long ago. Pretty soon, the everything else combined category will be starved to nothing.
