The point of the 'angels dancing on the head of a pin' comment is exactly how you've used it. It was originally used to mock pointless ecclesiastical debate, and has become a metaphor for wasting time debating topics of no practical value (I'm sure Brent would challenge that last part, but don't get drawn into an argument about it!).

No argument about the number of angels that can dance on the head of a pin ever actually took place, as far as I know.
