A very slow data rate is still a stupid idea. 

 

The US uses a slow data rate to communicate with subs. The antennas are incredibly long.

Sure.  But if the star’s light is analogous to the AM carrier frequency, how long is the requisite antenna?  

 

Your eyes will do.  Some basic instruments to record the dimming over the distance, you are ready to receive.  Everything within thousands of light years can easily receive that signal.
