You were told the chances were much less.

Some sources misquoted that to say the chances were 0%.  Few if any of
those were official sources with a responsibility to be completely
correct.

But it was known since well before Covid-19 that vaccines merely lower
your chances of catching whatever it is they guard against, not zero
it out entirely.

It protected against certain of the mutated forms.  I don't
immediately know if any were "a mild seasonal flu", but I do know that
some of the mutated forms were far worse than that, and the worst ones
were generally what the additional vaccines were aimed at.
