>…It is a proven fact that the oil exporting countries DID rely on the strait of Hormuz for 3/4 of a century, and they only ran into a serious problem with it 6 months ago when king Donald decided to fix it. Even Grok knows that if something isn't broken then don't fix it, but of course Grok is much smarter than King Donald, and so was GPT-2.

Another view: Iran has been refining uranium for some time, over the objection of Israel and the USA. It isn’t difficult to understand why: Iran is a theocracy, led by a religion guy. The motivation of a political leader is clear enough, unless he is guided by religious notions, such as a willingness to die in order to slay Jews. Iran made it clear enough the reason they were refining uranium.

The USA tried to stop the refinement by bombing the site, but that didn’t work. So… the next step of escalation is to close the Strait of Hormuz. The goal isn’t to maximize oil flow thru that strait, the goal is to stop the uranium refinement.

The nations on the west side of the strait have ways and will develop more ways to export their oil without the strait: trucking it over land to the Med. Iran does not have that option if the strait is closed. It can truck their oil over land to sell to… let’s see… Turkey, Azerbaijan, Turkmenistan, Afghanistan or Pakistan if they wish.

John if you reply to this comment, do so from the point of view of the goal being the security of Israel rather than maximizing the flow of Iranian oil. The Jews have a right to exist.

Aside: John, your being a big fan of wind power, it surprises me that you are so bothered by the restriction of Middle Eastern oil. Raising and keeping the price at 90 is a big advantage to alternate power sources, including wind and solar: it makes them more likely to pay, which attracts investors. Higher oil prices will drive efficiency, which is a good thing. It also brings nukes back into the game, all while coal and fracking look more attractive as investments.

Second aside: that local gas power plant which has sat idle for years was running yesterday.
