I am amazed that it is completely quiescent out there right at the peak of the season.  Still nothing for the next seven days.

 

It occurred to me that breaking a record with only 66 years is not a big deal.  We see hundred year old temperature records broken every year on both ends of the thermometer.  Now I want to figure out how to calculate the rarity of breaking that latest first hurricane record by one day, by two days, by a week, etc.  Then we could set up a betting pool, even if it is just play money, respectars for instance.  Nothing is any fun unless there is some kind of wagering going on, ja?

Sure, but consider that the internet providers have a shielded isolated power source.  We have those out here in case of earthquake: ya just damn well need the internet to stay up.  If so, you can do without power for a while.  September in southern Florida would be very uncomfortable, but I lived down there without AC until my parents could afford it, and we used to go camping, always in the summer, never AC out there.  Grumpy under those conditions, I get it.

 

However… consider how much better it is now than even two decades ago.  No need to be grumpy: a blackout need not put us in the stone age.  We spend plenty of time just surfing around on the internet.  Assume a laptop computer, which will run without AC, and a battery backup for your router and any other internet related gear.  If one has a camper, those have a lot of stored power in the form of batteries.  I popped for lithium batteries in mine, which cost a lot but will run your laptop and server for weeks.  If you don’t have that, a prole could use his lawnmower battery, which might be 48 volts, make a voltage divider, rig up a way to charge your laptop.  A dark week or two, you and mama in there with nothing to do but sit still (it’s hot and muggy) and watch… eh… OK scratch that idea, that would make the heat worse.  But you could watch other entertainment besides that.
