I was down there about a year ago and got exactly one mosquito bite in an entire week, no deer flies (remember those? (and for that matter, no horseflies (remember those? (where the heck did the biting flies go? (note I am not complaining, just asking.)))))
I haven't seen a cloud of mosquitoes since I moved from low country
South Carolina where they were omnipresent. Remember the land being
treated with dustings of DDT to keep them down? Mosquito Control was a
real project for the state, & my mom got a job regularly reporting to
them on the mosquito population. We lived out in the boonies and the
state didn't want to send some men in a truck out there just to check.
However, I have mosquitoes where I live now and working outdoors in
summer is most annoying because of long trousers, longsleeve shirts,
high collars, big sunhats. No-see-ums and mosquitoes are plentiful. :(
But not *clouds* like in the low country.
As for horseflies and deer flies, I do see them but very occasionally.
Odd, as I think I see more deer than deer flies.
