Surely that's what's happening now? Inequality has never been so high, and this kind of behaviour and consequence seems to be common, at least in recent history. It's probably happened throughout history. Maybe the only thing that curtails it is the collapse of a civilisation, which means we're in trouble either way. Either civilisation collapses (unlikely) or inequality reaches some kind of breaking point, and nobody knows what happens then. The collapse of civilisation, probably!

Just another facet of our not being able to manage ourselves very well.
