I could go to my local supermarket and buy one for under £500, with s/w, 
screen, speakers etc and printer bundle
Anything more specialist and one goes to PC World (although its premium 
prices). Otherwise if you're willing to wait a week go mailorder for 
just about anything. I live in a smallish town (pop 120k) and I know of 
at least ten places selling computers.
