Yeah, I remember GO were one of the first outfits to do this sort of thing
commercially, though it didn't take off back then. It seems to go like this
a lot of the time: the first couple of attempts at an idea don't go anywhere
because while the technology exists, it's still too expensive, clunky,
unreliable; then it passes a certain threshold level and all of a sudden the
next attempt succeeds big time.
