It gives them a working hypothesis, so that they
can get on with what they regard as more important.

Few people actually like to think, yet that's what
you have to do if there are unresolved important
questions.

This explains why there is so much anti-intellectualism.

Most people simply find that they have far better
things to do with their time than think, while on
the other hand, many of us enjoy it, even to the
exclusion of practically everything else.
