At the end of the day, I suspect that it is impossible to define what
"rational" leadership might be unless one defines not not only the
circumstances, but the societal goals it should strive to achieve.

Moreover, *all* kinds of leadership are historically "irrational" in the
sense that sooner or later they end up being defeated by new revolutionary
élites commanding popular support on the basis on new principles and myths.

That is, unless and until a really efficient, globalised, perfectly stagnant
Brave New World installs.
